The project was awarded for its creative interpretation of the existing layout and development of the square. The idea of enriching the square’s functions and form based on the pattern of its paving has both practical and symbolic significance. The transformation, in both of these layers, represents a true redevelopment rather than building anew. Continuity is a key value here. At the same time, this assumption does not preclude deep transformations which, in the opinion of the Competition Jury, are beneficial.

Two clearly defined types of space were achieved: a green, recreational area, and a paved, more formal space, scaled appropriately to accommodate potential public events and ceremonies. In this context, the relationship between the square and the buildings of the County Office, the City Hall, and the Cultural Center deserves a positive assessment.

The First Prize was awarded for the best proposal for developing the highly challenging area of the UW Campus at Krakowskie Przedmieście. The project most effectively addresses the needs for the campus’s growth and transformation, taking into account historical, programmatic, functional, and ecological conditions. It also offers feasibility and predictability in operating costs, while meeting requirements for accessibility, underground infrastructure, flexibility of use, and investment phasing.

In his presentation, “Conscious Use of Wood in Construction and Its Role in Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Buildings,” Mirosław highlighted key aspects of wood-based design, addressing issues related to acoustics, physical properties of the material, and relevant legal regulations. An important point of his talk was discussing how wooden structures help reduce buildings’ carbon footprint—one of the crucial challenges facing contemporary construction. He also reflected on prefabrication technology, illustrating how GWPA’s solutions perform in practice, from the design phase through project implementation.

After his presentation, Mirosław Wojcieszak took part in a panel discussion titled “Wood – What Next? Environmental and Technological Opportunities and Challenges.” Together with other industry experts—Agnieszka Kalinowska-Sołtys (APA Wojciechowski), Anna Zawadzka-Sobieraj (Mech.Build), and Piotr Brodniewicz (Andrewex Construction)—and moderated by Maciej Frąckowiak, he explored practical aspects of using wood in architecture. Panelists unanimously emphasized that wood, despite its undeniable ecological advantages, requires conscious and thoughtful handling in terms of technology selection and logistics processes. The discussion also provided an opportunity to debunk several myths surrounding the use of this natural material.

For GWPA, participation in ARCHI-STRADA was an inspiring experience, confirming that a responsible approach to design and ecological awareness are increasingly valued by architects and investors alike. We are delighted to actively contribute to shaping discussions about the future of sustainable construction.

During the 14th edition of the PLGBC Green Building Summit, our project “EkoWspólny” received recognition in the prestigious PLGBC Green Building Awards 2024.

The PLGBC Green Building Summit is the most recognizable and influential international event for all those shaping the future of sustainable construction, architecture, and real estate in Poland.

The primary aim of the “EkoWspólny” project was to create a model multi-family building for social housing, considering all aspects of its construction and operation. The concept focuses on the ease of adapting the building to future investors’ needs, optimizing construction time and costs, reducing maintenance costs, while minimizing its environmental impact, and improving the quality of life for residents by addressing their needs and social relationships. The project analyzed various location scenarios, from rural areas and small to medium-sized towns, to large cities with high building density. This flexibility suggests that the project can be easily modified and applied across different local conditions. One of the most important assumptions is the high level of prefabrication, facilitating its widespread use. The project aligns with the idea of a circular economy by striving to maintain the value of the solutions used for as long as possible. The building’s adaptability ensures that it can fulfill its function regardless of social and economic changes.

Efforts were made to minimize the negative environmental impact of construction by implementing eco-friendly solutions in the layout design of the estate, rainwater retention, and material choices. The project is also based on the concept of universal design, with a special focus on ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities and solutions tailored to different social groups. An LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) analysis was conducted for the building, evaluating its embedded carbon footprint.

The work was recognized for its successful integration of new buildings into the cityscape, accurate differentiation in form between the Cultural Center and the Town Hall, and clear development of the Sierakowskiego Street frontage. A distinct passage was created between the buildings, connected to the entrance area of the Town Hall. This is an organizing and enriching solution for the city center, especially at the junction of Piłsudski Square and Kisiel Square. Notably, the slightly inclined frontage of the Cultural Center directs users toward the passage entrance.

The concept includes the building’s adaptability to the needs of future investors, optimization of construction time and costs, reduction of maintenance costs while minimizing negative environmental impact through the use of prefabricated CLT elements, and ensuring the residents’ quality of life by considering their needs and social relationships. The project analyzes various location variants, from rural areas to small and medium-sized towns to large cities with high building density. This allows for the assumption that the project’s adaptability will enable its wide application in different local conditions. One of the most important premises is the highest possible degree of prefabrication of the structure, which aims to facilitate its widespread use.
