The main design task was to create the best possible architectural, spatial, functional, and economic concept for the adaptation and expansion of an existing facility. After the expansion, it will serve as a residential and medical care center.
The project is divided into three implementation stages. In the first stage, the CUS building will undergo renovation and expansion to include a new representative entrance area. This area will house a new staircase, elevator, and entrance hall. The plan also includes thermal modernization and reorganization of the existing interior walls to align with the specified functional program. After the expansion, the entrance will serve as a link between zones A and B.
In the second stage, the center will be expanded with part B, which will complement the functional program of part A by adding physiotherapy facilities. Additionally, on the ground floor in the southeast corner of the building, a bakery-café will be designed following the standards of a sheltered workshop, where participants can work. An external terrace will create a space conducive to neighborly interactions and engage people with disabilities, promoting inclusivity. A significant feature of the building is the sunny veranda located above the bakery-café, providing access to an extensive terrace on the upper floor and offering views of the shared garden for users. Both residents from part B and part A can use this terrace.
The third stage envisions the construction of building C, which, according to the competition guidelines, will have a studio character. The concept consists of a three-story structure with rooms for medical and therapeutic offices.
Buildings in stages B and C are designed using cross-laminated timber (CLT) construction.
