The concept of the upper secondary school together with the psychological and pedagogical counselling centre in Tarczyn stems from the belief that 21st-century educational architecture should be more than merely a functional обол (shell) for the teaching process. By design, the building is meant to become an active participant in education—an environment that shapes attitudes, inspires action, and prepares young people to function responsibly in the contemporary world.
The architecture breaks with the idea of a school as a monolithic edifice in favour of a fragmented, intimate structure reminiscent of a campus. Dividing the complex into smaller volumes of varied height made it possible to reduce its perceived scale and embed it within the existing context. This layout supports functional clarity: the individual blocks are separated, yet remain closely integrated through a central circulation spine. The main axis is a single-storey, largely glazed lobby that meanders between the teaching volumes. Extensive ground-floor glazing blurs the boundary between inside and outside, bringing light and greenery into the school. Its soft line forms a counterpoint to the orthogonal geometry of the individual blocks. The lobby roof has been used as an active recreational terrace—an accessible “fifth façade” for students. This elevated green zone, furnished with seating and small-scale site elements, extends break-time spaces, offering an attractive viewpoint over the sports areas and a place for outdoor socialising. Around the ground floor, the roof creates arcades that provide shelter from the elements while also forming welcoming, intimate recreational spaces. The plaza in front of the entrance has likewise been largely covered, emphasising the entry zone.
